Major Depression

  • Major Depression has a lifetime risk of 5-12% for men and 10-25% for women.

  • Only 25% of depressed patients seek treatment.

  • About 15% of depressed patients commit suicide.

  • The onset of depression is usually at 20 - 50 years of age ( mean age 40) but can also begin in childhood or old age.

  • Most frequently depression is seen in separated, divorced, people without close relationships
